SJM Film Screening + Discussion
May 22 at 7:00 pm in the Chapel
SJM invites you to view and discuss “There Went the Neighborhood,” a 40-minute documentary film, about the closing of the majority-Black Jones School (which now houses Community High School) in 1965 and the gutting of the surrounding Black neighborhood through various school integration and urban “renewal” efforts. SJM’s first event series, “Black & White in Ann Arbor” (2018-19), included presentations by women who experienced these events as neighborhood children. This film is part of the Ann Arbor District Library’s observation of the city’s bicentennial.

SJM Book Discussion + Meet the Author
The Social Justice Ministry of St. Andrew’s invite you to a discussion of The Injustice of Place: Uncovering the Legacy of Poverty in America with co-author Luke Shaefer on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at 7:00 pm in the Chapel.
About the Book: Through statistical analysis and local history, The Injustice of Place explores the places with the deepest legacy of poverty in America: rural communities in Appalachia, the Cotton and Tobacco Belts of the Deep South, and South Texas, that were ruthlessly exploited for their resources and then left to wither away. This book is a moving and meaningful guide to understanding some of our society’s most serious problems.
Meet the Author! Prof. Luke Shaefer, Director of U-M’s Poverty Solutions Center, who co-authored the book with Kathryn Edin and Timothy Nelson, will join us for a conversation led by St. Andrew’s parishioner Jim White.

Hymn 225: Hail Thee, Festival Day!
This great Pentecost hymn is actually the last part of a long Latin hymn. The original, composite Latin text included verses for Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. The words of the refrain are by the 6th-century poet, priest, and adventurer Venantius Honorius Fortunatus. The Pentecost verses come from a 14th-century service book in York Minster. The “sevenfold mystical offering” in v. 2 could refer to the seven gifts of the Spirit, the seven sacraments, or the seven virtues. Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote this magnificent music specifically for this majestic hymn: it makes the heart soar. - Donna Wessel Walker
Draw Us In the Spirit’s Tether (Friedell)
This morning’s anthem by Harold Friedell (1905-1958), composed in 1949, is a choral arrangement of lyrics originally written by the Anglican Priest Percy Dreamer in 1931. Friedell was Organist and Choirmaster at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City from 1945 to 1958 and, during those same years, served on the faculty of the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary. - Dennis Powers
